In the short story Las Pappas, by Julio Ortega contains many flashbacks
and symbolism. As soon as the story begins; the man slicing the potatoes (las
papas) is triggered a memory of his homeland Peru. The potatoes represent a
piece of Peru. He remembers how the potatoes of Peru are different from the one
he is cutting. The man admires the great diversity and rich flavor the potatoes
from his homeland used to have. Throughout the story the man is presented with
memories of his childhood while contemplating the potatoes. While the man
reflects upon his attitude towards the potatoes when he was a child, he is
happy to know that his son has not taken the potato for granted. The man realizes
that when he was a child that there were an abundant amount of potatoes. It was
because of the amount of the potato that
he would get fed up with them. During his child hood the man
acknowledges that he did not know as much of the potatoes as he thought he did.
He admires his family's past and does not want their traditions too die or
disappear like the different variety of potatoes that were once in his homeland.
